My Learning Preference

We are now going to take a different direction and move away from the topic of Return on Investment (ROI) for e-Learning in organisations.

In my University Studies, as part of my E-Learning Experiences subject, I had to complete an online survey on Vark that resulted in showing my preferred Learning styles.

The Learning styles that were listed on the site were:

  • Visual (Learn through visual queues)
  • Aural (Learn from Listening)
  • Read/Write (Learn from reading and writing)
  • Kinesthetic (Learn from doing and practice)

I have found out that my Studying Strategy was Multimodal. This means that I am one of the majority of the population who learns from a combination of learning styles. People with multimodal preferences may require more than one style for learning.

However, from this survey I have found that my strongest style of learning is the read/write. When someone prefers to learn through reading and writing, they intake information through lists, headings, glossaries, handouts, textbooks, notes, essays and manuals. These people usually study by writing out words repeatedly, reading notes repeatedly, rewriting ideas and principles into their own words and convert diagrams into statements.

My preferred learning style of read/write influences the layout of my weblog. This is particularly evident with the length of my posts to explain ideas and concepts. For my next E-Learning assignment, I will be required to review a course that is offered on the web. I believe that the course that I will select will be influenced by my preference to learn through reading and writing. However, the fact that I am also a multimodal learner, may influence me to choose an online course containing more multimedia features.
