Differing terms used to describe e-learning
This article is very useful for people who are new to the concept of e-learning. The main issues in the article is that “elearning, web-based learning, online learning and distance learning” are terms that are widely used interchangedly with eachother. The problem with this, is the fact that these terms represent similar, yet different concepts.
”A clear understanding of these concepts and their fundamental differences is important for both the educational and training communities. Applying each of these terms adequately is key to assuring reliable communication between clients and vendors, members of technical teams, and the research community. A thorough familiarity with each concept and its distinctive characteristics is a critical factor in establishing adequate specifications, evaluating alternative options, selecting best solutions, and enabling and promoting effective learning practices” (Tsai, S. & Machado, P. 2002).
Therefore, it is important to differentiate these terms, so that the following advantages can be achieved:
- Faster development of expertise in these seperate areas
- Less confusing communications in regards to these subject matters
- Easier identification and understanding of other available alternative solutions
Below are some of the definitions that I came up with after reading this article:
- E-learning involves learning where computers and networks play a significant part in the learning process.
- Web-based learning is associated with learning materials delivered in a Web browser. They can be access materials from any location around the world.
- Distance learning involves interaction at geographical distances between instructor and learners. Timely feedback and interactions are needed between learners and teachers.
